The Contest Continues…

Semifinal screen       The Gamespot All TIme Greatest Game Hero voting continues and the fabled four stand ready for the ultimate clash. Unfortunately I was not able to update the latest. But now                                                        when I get the opportunity I bring to you the bird’s eye view of what’s been happening.

THE LOSS OF SOME GREAT HEROES

The close one

The close competition

The legendary mercenary solid snake had to face defeat after a hard, tough and unpredictable competition between the icon of PC gaming Gordon Freeman the first one who took us to an unprecedented level of stealth gaming, Solid Snake. Well, simply saying that the competition was tough would be insufficient so lets say that out of the total 131845 people who voted, snake lost by only 119 votes. All Metal Gear fans (of course me too) mourn his defeat and are disappointed for not being able to see him even in the elite eight. But, then I would remind all the MGS fans of what our hero actually said-

I am no hero. Never was. Never will be.

So I guess how much we wanted we couldn’t make him win 😦

The second great knockout was of the one character who was there representing the entire Final Fantasy Series, Cloud Strife. Well, we cannot say the God Of War (Kratos)did not deserve to win but still a terrible loss of the FF fans.

The Ones Who Made it To the EIGHT

Well it was Mario, Link, Freeman and Nukem as expected however it was Samus Aran and Mega Man who I would call not deserving  lucky. All I say is that they could have been up against stronger ones who were actually at one corner of the standings table. Never mind though.

THE FABLED FOUR

The 4 most prestigious among the total 64 heroes are left standing. Here’s a list of the Fable Four along with a short analysis of each one.

1) MARIO-

The famed plumber

The famed plumber

Serving as Nintendo’s mascot and the main protagonist of the series, Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation. Though originally only appearing in platform games, starting with Donkey Kong, Mario currently appears in many video game genres, such as racing, puzzle, role-playing, fighting and sports games, and others.

Mario is one of the most famous characters in video game history, and his image is commonly associated with video games.

In this contest Mario has been successful in getting more than a 65% in each round and is expected to qualify for the finals. Many of us deep within us already know quite well that he’ll easily win  put up a respectable fight. Let’s see…

2) SAMUS ARAN- Samus is an intergalactic bounty hunter, environmentalist, and planetary savior. And one tough lady.

Lucky??

Lucky??

Introduced in the 1986 video game Metroid, Samus is a bounty hunter typically fitted with an armor suit with weapons that include beams and missiles. Throughout the series, she executes missions given to her by the Galactic Federation while hunting the antagonistic Space Pirates and their leader, Ridley, along with the energy-draining alien parasites called Metroids.

Samus has been generally well-received by video gamers. However, one thing I’d like to say is that is Samus actually one of the 4 best gaming characters ever?? Well, I’m not quite sure. Of course, some Metroid fans would not appreciate that but I feel that there have many others who have due to variety of reasons either not been included or have faced the agony of defeat. Well, never mind, this intergalactic hunter has finally reached the end of her journey. Perhaps…

The Legend of Link

The Legend of Link

3) LINK- Created by Shigeru Miyamoto, The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo’s core franchises, and has sold over 47 million copies worldwide as of 2007. The series’ enduring popularity has led to many incarnations of the Zelda story and Link himself; the character’s first appearance was in the game The Legend of Zelda. Link has been featured in other video games from Nintendo, including its merchandising, comic books, and an animated television program.

Link is depicted as a Hylian boy from the fictional land of Hyrule. His age varies in each game, usually varying from pre-teen ages to late teens. Link often travels through Hyrule, defeating creatures, evil forces and the series’ primary antagonist, Ganon whilst attempting to save Princess Zelda and her kingdom.

The character Link has been overall well received by critics and fans and has been doing pretty well in this contest which is clearly seen by his victory over Donkey Kong by 81 to 18 percent. Even after so much fame and long video gaming history Link seems to be having a tough time against Freeman.

4) GORDON FREEMAN- He is a physicist who finds himself thrust into a battle for survival against hostile alien forces. Throughout the series, Gordon must prevail in hostile situations despite overwhelming odds,

usually without backup. As a means of immersing the player in the role, the character never speaks, and there are no cut-scenes or mission briefings — all action is viewed through Gordon’s eyes, with the player retaining control of Gordon’s actions at nearly all times. Gordon Freeman though appeared in only a few games has often been regarded as the father of PC gaming mostly due to the success of the Half Life Series. He has been also greatly liked and voted by all Gamespot members. He has given tough competition to Solid Snake as well as Link. I pray he reaches the finals so that we have one hardcore finalist.
